INPATIENT UnitS

The new Griffith Base Hospital is a bright, modern space bringing all health services under one roof, with a strong focus on comfort, safety, and a welcoming environment for everyone. The new hospital includes six dedicated inpatient units which will provide care for the following services:

  • Paediatrics

  • Maternity & Birthing

  • Intensive Care

  • Medical care

  • Surgical care

  • Rehabilitation & Aged Care

These units will be spread across two levels:

  • Level One: Paediatrics, Maternity and Birthing, and Intensive Care

  • Level Two: Medical, Surgical, Rehabilitation & Aged Care

Designed with comfort and our patients in mind

Natural light floods the building, with every patient room featuring large windows. At the end of each corridor, floor-to-ceiling windows offer calming views across Griffith and the surrounding landscape.

Griffith Base Hospital’s General Manager, Joanne Garlick, said the new hospital has been designed to optimise health care services in both the acute and outpatient setting.

“As well as the features for inpatients, there is state of the art technology to support virtual health care services to benefit the community,” she said.

“Inpatients and their families will also continue to have the convenience of the United Hospital Auxiliary’s kiosk . It is located in the hospital reception area and acknowledging the importance of a long standing tradition of support to the hospital and the community. Staff and the community will also enjoy the benefit of a cafe, and outdoor seating areas.

Family and carers haven’t been forgotten either – there’s dedicated waiting areas outside each unit, complete with a beverage station and nearby interview rooms for private conversations with the medical team.

To make patient care smoother and more comfortable, the hospital includes:

  • Separate patient/staff and public corridors and lifts

  • Mobile cardiac monitoring units

  • A hospital-wide pneumatic tube system for moving things quickly

  • Pendant arm lifters for safe and respectful patient transfers

  • Bariatric-friendly rooms with spacious bathrooms

  • Special isolation rooms for infection control

All rooms (whether single or double) come with their own ensuite.

More Space, Better Care

One of the biggest benefits of the new hospital is more space. That means more room for patients, storage, and easier day-to-day operations for staff.

Staff will also enjoy improved facilities, including:

  • Larger offices and workrooms

  • Spacious nurse stations

  • Dedicated staff rooms for breaks and an outdoor area for fresh air

  • Designated staff and patient-only corridors and lifts will support the movement of people throughout the hospital and ensure privacy for consumers.

All existing services (except Dental) will relocate and settle into the new hospital when it opens. We have planned for our staff, patients and community to settle into the new building before bringing additional services online or increasing the capacity of existing services. There will be no decrease in beds or services.

Access to the new hospital

When the new hospital opens, everyone should continue using the main entrance of the old hospital. Parking stays the same for now, but new and improved parking areas (with easier drop-off zones and better access) are on the way and should be finished later this year.
